Sunny windowsills: helping indoor cats claim a view safely
Why the window matters
Ask most indoor cats where they want to be at 10 am and they will walk you to the brightest window. The sill is their TV, their sunbed, and their lookout. Making that spot safe and comfy is one of the easiest things you can do for an indoor cat.
Pick the right window
Watch where your cat already sits. That is usually the best choice. If you are setting up a new spot, look for:
- A view with some movement, like trees, birds, or a quiet street
- Morning sun, which is softer than hot afternoon glare
- A calm part of the house, away from the front door and the washing machine
- An easy way up, such as a chair, low shelf, or cat tree
Check screens and openings
An open window is the main risk. Cats can push through loose flyscreens, especially when a bird lands close by.
- Make sure screens are fitted firmly and not torn.
- Only open windows a small gap if there is no screen.
- Keep balcony doors shut unless the balcony is fully netted.
- Remember that a relaxed cat can still jump fast at a moth.
Blind cords and curtains
Loose blind cords are a tangle hazard for cats and kids. Tie them up high with a cleat, or swap to a cordless blind. Heavy curtains are fine, but check that curtain rods are fixed well if your cat likes to climb fabric.
Plants on the sill
Many common houseplants are not safe for cats to chew. Lilies are a serious danger. If you are not sure about a plant, move it off the sill and check with your vet or a trusted poison list before putting it back.
Heat and glare
Glass can get very hot in an Australian summer. Feel the sill around 3 pm on a warm day. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for a long nap.
- Add a light sheer curtain for the afternoon.
- Keep a water bowl in the same room.
- Offer a cooler spot nearby, like a tiled floor or shaded bed.
Adding a perch or bed
A narrow sill can be made comfier in a few ways:
- A folded blanket or small cushion on a deep sill
- A low shelf or side table pushed under the window
- A suction-cup hammock on the glass for sills that are too thin
We have a window hammock sample on order and will try it on a few different windows at home:
Window hammock with suction cups (Black)
A soft suction-cup bed for window glass, about 55 × 35 cm. Easy to move between sunny spots.
- Mount: suction cups on clean, smooth glass
- Size: about 55 × 35 cm
- Colour shown: Black
We've ordered this to try at home and will share how it goes once it arrives and we've lived with it for a bit.
Helping your cat claim it
Put something that smells like them on the new perch, like an old towel. Leave it alone for a day. A treat beside the spot is enough of a nudge. Most cats settle in on their own time, so try not to lift them onto it again and again.
FAQ
Is it okay for my cat to sit in the sun all day?
Short sunny naps are normal. Make sure there is shade and water nearby, and check the glass is not getting too hot.
My cat chatters at birds. Is that a problem?
No. It is a common hunting reaction. A short play session afterwards can help them let off some steam.
